150MW on Time And on Budget: Powering London’s Digital Future
From grid connection to substation handover — powering London’s digital growth

150MW
Delivery of power to site and the construction of an onsite 33kV to 11kV Substation.
The challenge
Installing temporary connections to provide 40MW to site from 2024 to “Power On” of the full permanent supply. This included managing the process to ensure full permanent supply comes online by the time construction of the data centres has finished. Another challenge was coordination with HS2 to install cabling from the DNO substation to site, managing various stake holders in the area to arrange road closures and night works to minimize disruption. Further challenges were encountered in the form of a phased “Power On” approach and sectional handover of the substation to the client
What We Did
BCS worked as part the client team managing the ongoing correspondence with NGET and IDNO to ensure that delivery remained on time and budget.
Key actions:
· Continuation of negotiations with NGET for permanent and temporary power.
· Manage discussions between the IDNO and the client.
· Project management of the design and construction of the substation.
· Coordinate the installation of cables to and from the substation including stakeholder management.
· Manage grid consultants and designers.
· Manage fibre procurement and installation.
Unforeseen problems?
Solved fast.
Like any project, things came up. BCS kept the momentum going by acting fast and decisively:
· Mitigating delays to power on date by continuous engagement and applying pressure to NGET.
· Non-firm power offered from NGET-BCS worked with NGET to extend the temporary power solution to fill the gap.
· Substation handover was due to be phased, this presented a security risk, BCS found a solution to keep the contractor in possession of the site for longer at no extra cost.
The Result
· Provided a clear and actionable set of deliverables to drive the project forward.
· Temporary power remains operational.
· Stakeholders in the surrounding area managed and no issues reported.
· Substation contractor completing work on time and on budget.
