BCS apprenticeship scheme opens the door to one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.Combine university study with real-world experience and progress towards professional chartership. See how the programme works.
What it is
The data centre sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, but it faces a huge skills gap. Many young people don’t yet know about the opportunities in this sector, even though it underpins almost everything we do in our digital lives.
The BCS Apprentice Scheme, launched in 2019, was created to bridge that gap. Now in its sixth year, with 14 current apprentices and 5 MSc apprentices, the programme offers a clear entry route into the industry. It’s a five-year degree pathway that combines academic study with hands-on work experience, allowing apprentices to build practical skills in their chosen profession while gaining theoretical knowledge from their university studies.
Why we launched it
The data centre industry urgently needs new talent, and we wanted to open the door for people at the very start of their careers. Our apprenticeship programme ensures that motivated individuals can learn, earn, and grow at the same time, building the next generation of professionals who will keep this industry moving.
How it works
- Five-year structure – apprentices split their time between university study and working on live BCS projects.
- Mentorship & exposure – they work alongside senior staff, gaining insight into different service lines.
- Weekly in-house training – dedicated sessions to sharpen skills, expand knowledge, and build confidence.

Success so far
Since launching, we’ve welcomed apprentices across multiple disciplines, including project and cost managers, and looking to open new lines in the operations side. Many are now progressing toward their professional chartership, proving that the programme creates long-term career opportunities within BCS and the wider data centre industry.
The apprentice program has been a great way to learn on the job while building my skills. I’ve enjoyed getting stuck into real projects and having the support to keep improving as I go.
